Portraits of a Community:

A Collection of Paintings and Sculptures by Kathryn Hogg

Exhibition Dates: March 10 - May 2
Reception Date: Sunday, March 22, 1-3pm (artist present)

From Within, is an exhibition formed by exchange. It is both a commentary on the power of community, of place, of self, but also of the creative exchanges that are held within our everyday environments. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Old Town Hall, Hogg works at the heart of this historic space. As a working artist in this community, her practice emerges from the heart of this town.

This collection of painted portraits and sculpted figures asks us to reflect on what it means to create and to experience from within: from within a body, from within a community, and from within the walls of the very hall that now present her work. It brings together depictions of local community members, where shifting responsive exchange can be seen within each painting. Hogg’s painterly style molds with the presence of each sitter, evolving from energy, conversation, and familiarity.

Several self-portraits appear throughout the exhibition as well, gently folding the artist into the community she represents. These works underscore the reciprocal nature of observation and the connections that can be found within our surroundings. Look even closer and you’ll find a sculptural work presented in its three-dimensional form, also simultaneously replicated within the painting situated beside it. Smaller figurative sculptures in yoga postures reference an activity regularly held within the Old Town Hall, visually showcasing the lived rhythms of the building itself.

In From Within, Hogg reminds us that art does not simply hang on walls, it emerges from lived experience, from relationships, from memory, from movement and from stillness. The works gathered here are not only about community; they are of it, shaped by proximity, familiarity, and care. This exhibition asks viewers to consider what it means to belong to a place, and what it means to create from inside it.
